Who is PWM?
April Grisetti, PA-C, FAWM
April is a nationally certified Physician Assistant, and Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine, with more than 17 years of clinical experience, currently practicing on the Olympic Peninsula. She has been teaching with Wilderness Medical Associates since 2009.
After a frightening experience in the mountains of northern New Mexico many moons ago, in which a high altitude storm led to multiple unexpected stressors including the effects of altitude illness, lightening, cold stress and a partner's injury, she realized that even as a healthcare provider she felt ill-prepared both physically and emotionally to handle these problems in such a remote and challenging environment. This inspired her to sign up for a Wilderness Advanced Life Support class and led to her volunteering as a ground-pounder with multiple search and rescue organizations, as well as working in base clinics at Angel Fire ski resort followed by Ski Santa Fe in northern New Mexico. She has since deployed with Team Rubicon to Texas, Puerto Rico and Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas to provide medical care among other services to communities hit hardest by destructive hurricanes. She has also been a set medic for a reality competition show in which contestants were dropped in a remote location and required to reach a specific, time sensitive objective with minimal gear or resources.
April aims to provide a strong foundation for students to build from and to help them gain confidence in providing basic medical care and differentiating emergent verses non-emergent conditions. By targeting need-to-know information and offering ample hands-on practice, her students will gain confidence in assessing and managing ill or injured persons in resource limited environments.
